Monochrome as Hierarchy
How a narrow palette can make luminance, edge, scale, and spacing more legible.
Reduction reveals relationships
A monochrome or near-monochrome field reduces hue competition and increases the importance of lightness, edge, texture, scale, and interval. Hierarchy can become clearer because fewer variables compete for attention.
Not an absence of color information
Monochrome remains a designed color condition shaped by capture, processing, export, and display. A published gray does not by itself establish the physical color of the depicted object.
